has anyone got any useful tips on purchasing a used motor home, what sort of things should i check?

Q) i am thinking of buying a used motor home, but i am unsure what things i should check for, also which is the best make and model to purchase, anyone any useful advice please.

A) As in a caravan?

my daughter bought a used motor home. her question is does the alternator provide a steady charge to both?

Q) the auto battery and the deepcyle RV battery? thanks in advance for answer..

A) If it was done correctly, yes. If you have a voltmeter, you can measure the voltage across each of the batteries with the engine off, they should read somewhere around 12.6v or so, higher if the engine had been run recently. Then start the engine and with engine running, read the voltages again, should be at least 13.5 and possibly more like 14v with engine running. If so, this indicates that there is sufficient voltage to recharge the battery. This concludes the answer to your question. Now for all the stuff you probably didnt care about but would be handy to know if you ever have trouble with it... There are two common ways to have one alternator charge two batteries automatically. One is to use a diode-type isolator which will be a finned heat-sink with 3 big terminals on it, one terminal connects to the output of the alternator, 2nd terminal goes to the wire that was originally connected to the output of the alternator (this wire basically goes back to the engine battery and if they built this thing to be a motorhome rather than a van conversion or something you may actually just see a heavy cable go from here to the engine battery), the 3rd terminal goes to the auxiliary (deep cycle) battery. The diodes are like check-valves, they will let power from the alternator go to either of the batteries but will prevent a load on one battery from draining the other when the engine is off. The other type of battery isolator is a solenoid, similar to what ford uses for engine starters except this will be in a metal can with two large terminals on the side and one or two small terminals. When power is applied to the small terminal, it turns on a connection between the two large terminals. You run a heavy wire from the engine battery (which is charged by the alternator) to one big terminal and then from the other big terminal to the aux battery. The small term is hooked to the ignition key so that when the key is in the "run" position, the solenoid turns on and connects the two batteries together, sort of like using jumper cables to charge the aux battery, just a lot more convenient. The solenoid approach is dirt cheap, simple and probably the most often used approach where somebody didnt want to go to a lot of trouble or expense. While I think that for some applications the diode-type isolator is superior, I currently use a solenoid for charging two large deep cycle batteries in my van and it has worked fine for me for many years.

can someone tell which banks will finance a used motor home for me!?

A) probably have to get a personal loan if its over 5 years old, and your regular bank can do that for you

what is the best way to sell a used, big, motor home?

A) You can advertise it in the paper or contact a consignment lot. The consignment lots wil take a percentage of what it sells for and the newspaper will charge you for the ad.

If I mix used motor oil with kerosene could I use it as home heating fuel?

Q) A friend of mine told me that he takes his used motor oil (from car oil changes) and pours it into his home heating oil tank. He says he has been doing this for a couple of years. The only downfall is that he has to chande the filter about twice as much. I figure that it might better to mix the used oil 1 to 1 with kerosene.

A) Used motor oil will smoke more and create a lot more soot in the chimney. Yes mixing it with furnace oil or kerosene will reduce the effects but still it'll make more smoke etc. The used oil has a lot of dirt in it so filtering first would be prudent as that dirt does not burn well and I would think could cause problems with the furnace burner. There are used oil burners (furnaces actually) available but many states etc are banning them as being environmentally bad (not proven with facts). So see if burner can handle the thicker fluid flow. Beauty of kerosene is it is quite a bit like furnace oil which is bunker 2 or winterized bunker 1. Bunker if filtered becomes diesel fuel. Yes kerosene can be burnt in a diesel motor but again it burns a little differently (not good for new 2007 engines).

I want to know how to make a home made used motor oil burner?

Q) if posible i want a step by step procedure since this is my first time to make my own used oil burner. Pictures will be a big help. Thanks

A) ive only seen 1 it was a barrel over the stove and back a good ways, with line running off it with a valve then running into the wood stove and it just leaked a little at a time on top of the fire it was a very slow drip more than a steady stream

helo, anyone can tell me how much power consumption of the motor used in home auto gate .thank you?

A) Power=Watts Watts=Volts x Amperes Having said that, Look on the name plate and find the voltage used and the amperage. That will give you the watts. Gate motors usually don't cost much to operate because they do not run for long.

What is the top rated used class c motor home?

A) I don't believe there is any top motor home or trailer in any category of RV's.. There are many different manufacturers that make comparable motor homes. Just like cars, everyone has their favorites. Check out RV.Net for some good information and opinions. You might also go to an RV Show just to get a feel for what's out there and makes/models of the different manufacturers. Good Luck & happy camping.
